Vinicius Cantuária

Singer, guitarist, composer, and drummer Vinicius Cantuaria is a Brazilian musician who straddles the worlds of Bossa Nova and Jazz. Born in Manaus, the heart of the Amazon, he grew up in Rio, and after several successful records with his rock band O Terco, he moved to New York in the mid-90s. His first recording in the US, Sol Na Cara, established Cantuaria as a pioneer of the neo-Brazilian movement and he soon became an important downtown figure, forging lasting collaborations with artists as eclectic as Brian Eno, Laurie Anderson, Brad Mehldau, Arto Lindsay, Bill FrisellMarc RibotDavid Byrne, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. In Brazil, Cantuaria has had many successes with his hit pop songs “Lua e Estrela” (“Moon and Star), “Coisa Linda,” “So Você,” and “Na Cançao”; and as a sideman, he has performed with Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Marcos Valle, among others.He has released several internationally recognized albums: Sol Na Cara, Amor Brasileiro, Tucuma, Vinicius, Horse & Fish, Cymbals, Samba Carioca. 2011’s Lagrimas Mexicanas is a duet album with guitarist Frisell, who also appears Vinicius’s latest release, Indio de Apartamento, along with Sakamoto, Norah Jones, and Jesse Harris.
